- Hiking Shoes: A good pair of hiking shoes is essential for any hiking trip. Look for shoes that offer good support, traction, and protection from the elements. I recommend the Hoka Anacapa Low GTX or the Merrell Moab. I recently did a 17 mile trail run in the Ozarks in the Hoka Anacapa and was pleased with the sturdiness of the shoe and support of the shoe. The Merrell Maob are my tried and true hiking shoe, and my preferred for any desert environment.
- Good socks: As important as good shoes are, good socks can make or break a hike. Smartwool socks and Feetures are my go to.
- Backpack: A backpack is a must-have for carrying all your hiking essentials. Choose one that fits comfortably and has enough room for everything you need.
- Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial when hiking. Bring a reusable water bottle that you can refill along the way.
- Trail Map: Always bring a trail map of the area you’ll be hiking in. This will help you navigate the trail and avoid getting lost.
- Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays by applying sunscreen before your hike. Look for a waterproof and sweat-resistant formula.
- Snacks: Hiking can be a physically demanding activity, so it’s important to bring snacks to keep your energy levels up. Choose snacks that are high in protein and carbs, like trail mix or energy bars. Some of my favorites are Bomb Bars and Built Bars.
- First Aid Kit: Accidents can happen on the trail, so it’s always a good idea to bring a first aid kit. Pack items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers.
- Layers: Weather conditions can change quickly on the trail, so it’s important to dress in layers. Bring a lightweight jacket, hat, and gloves in case of chilly weather.
- Repellent: From insects to bears, you need to be prepared. Bring an insect repellent that contains DEET to keep bugs at bay and if you’re hiking in the pacific northwest, plan to buy some bear spray.
- Headlamp or Flashlight: If you’re planning on hiking during low-light hours, bring a headlamp or flashlight to light your way. This is especially important if you’re camping overnight on the trail.
By being prepared with the right gear, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable hiking trip. So, pack your bags and hit the trail!
